The Perfect Final Project for New York.....

This cake was ordered by a really thoughtful husband wanting to inspire his wife. What a sweet surprise to come home to on a Tuesday night... This is a 6" 2 layer cake, golden yellow sponge filled with vanilla custard and fresh raspberry preserves. Thanks Shaun, I loved collaborating on this cake to design exactly what you wanted. I really enjoyed working on this project.

Homeless in Oklahoma....

So army housing didn't feel it would be necessary to let us know the odds of us moving up the wait list before Sept 2ND when we arrive are about 0 of 0! The area we are moving to is really desolate from what we are accustomed to. By no means am I expecting malls with Nordstrom or a Yelp reviewed restaurant. The issue is the nothingness and the housing options. MOST military posts have tons of new off post housing developments conducive to families and not just single 19 year old Army privates. Definitely not what I am signing up for.

So... the options are.... pay a ton of money to live in a high rise in Oklahoma city, feel somewhat normal and make Steve drive 1.5hrs each way. Not a good option for him given he will be in school and that isn't really fair. Option 2 is for Sofie and I to live in Dallas where I am comfortable, familiar and well.... we really love it there. Option 3 is to pray that on the 22nd when he brings the car out to OK one of the 2... YES 2 houses i would consider living in by the Army post ARE really what they look like in pictures and are still available. If not... well... like I said... Homeless in Oklahoma. At least we know they have good steak. Ugh..

Strawberry Shortcake Birthday Cake

I had no idea they completely updated Strawberry Shortcakes look!? This cake was fondant icing, golden vanilla sponge cake and an amazing strawberry filling made with fresh strawberries, jam and condensed milk. It was yummmmmmy if I do say so myself. Normally I am not an advocate of anything inedible on baked goods- but the fun of getting a toy off of the top of your cake superseded. Happy 4th Birthday little Kate!

Babies and Cupcakes....

Here is a sneak peak at an order I am working on for tomorrow.... nothing earth shattering but really cute. Well atleast I think so. These are some of the cupcake toppers I am making along with a sample red velvet cupcake that they will eventually rest on.

Opening the doors......

I would love to give credit to the creator of this cupcake but the site says it doesn't exist anymore. I by no means plan to bite their creativity. But I do want to thank them for paving the way and reminding me to feel comfortable creating politically inspired cupcakes.... I can see it now....

ideas for cupcake toppers:

a fondant teddy Kennedy, cocktail in hand, wind in hair, stop sign blown.
gumpaste gitmo detainees at the local McDonald's drive thru, enjoying the American dream

no no no... I am JUST KIDDING. My point is, baking is for fun.... imagination... it isn't real life.... EVEN I wouldn't poison something as sweet and innocent as a cupcake with a political message. But it really did get my creative juices flowing.... Anyone working on the Palin 2012 campaign? LOL

Own it & Embrace it.

My husband often says that when he is 90 he is going to come back to Brooklyn, drive around in his car and just not give a ****. You know, cruise at 3 miles an hour down 18th Avenue, triple park and blast WFAN while cursing in disagreement with whom ever is doing the play by play for whatever sport is being broadcast.

I think lately I have been living his dream, but I am 30 and doing it in traffic on the Belt Parkway. I am a true New Yorker. A product of the 80's and adolescent of the 90's who had truly good hip hop to revel in and can be so brutally honest it may one day get me killed. Having that said, since being exposed to the military and real middle/ southern American culture, my life has changed. The norm for them is new and fresh to me. Things I used to make fun of is actually really unique to me now and enlightening. I love it.

Things like Hello Kitty AK-47's just blow my mind. I thought about ordering one just to see for myself that it was a real gun and that there really is a market for this out there. (http://www.glamguns.com/hk47.html)

So what I have been doing lately as my "New York you have burnt me out and here is my going away present" you ask?

I drive in traffic at rush hour on the Belt Parkway BLASTING country music. I actually really like it and think it really changes up atmosphere. Do the Jamaican cab drivers or Russian mob rings appreciate it? You'd have to ask them.....but do I enjoy their antics? Nope, so karma is a bitch in Brooklyn these days.

Look for me out there, and try it sometime...it's liberating and hysterical.

Happy Sunday Gravy......
